Choosing an agency

Build the team, or hire the firm, and the arithmetic nobody publishes.

Most of our retainers run alongside an in-house team rather than instead of one. So the useful question is not agency or hire. It is which parts of the work belong inside your building, and which parts no single hire can carry.

01The short answer

Hire in-housewhen the work is continuous and the volume is steady.

Both halves, at the same size, in the order a buyer needs them. If the left-hand column describes your situation, take it — we would rather lose the engagement than run it badly.

Three reasons to hire instead
The work never stopsOne brand, one platform, every week of the year. A person at full time on one discipline beats a firm at a fifth of six.
You can hire and keep senior peopleIf your market has the specialist you need and you can retain them, employing them is cheaper at steady state. That is arithmetic, not modesty.
The knowledge should live in your buildingSome capabilities are the business. Those belong inside, and we will tell you when we think one of them is.
Three reasons to hire the firm instead
No single discipline justifies a hireYou need brand, experience, platform and growth at a share of each. Four hires is not the answer to a problem that is one fifth of four jobs.
The deadline is shorter than a hiring cycleSearch, notice period and ramp is a quarter, often two. A senior strategist is on the work in the first week.
You need it working before you can justify headcountSeven days, $5,000 fixed, a working version of your business, and it is yours whatever happens next.
02Side by side

Nine rows, and one of them goes the other way.

A comparison worth reading has rows the author loses. These are the differences that change a decision, in the order they come up on a first call.

03The cost of choosing us

What hiring us costs you.Three things, stated plainly.

01

At true steady state, employing is cheaper

If the work is genuinely the same volume every week for years, a hire beats a retainer on cost. We will say so rather than sell around it.

02

The knowledge sits with us until we hand it over

So we hand it over: portal architecture, integrations and playbooks documented as we go, and yours whether or not the retainer continues.

03

We will eventually tell you to hire

The engagements we end are usually the ones where a client should now employ the capability. That conversation is part of the work, not a loss of it.

Common questions

What buyers askbefore approving a headcount.

Should we hire an agency or build an in-house team?

Hire in-house when the work is continuous at a steady volume and you can keep senior specialists, because employing is cheaper at steady state. Hire a firm when you need four disciplines at a share of each, when the deadline is shorter than a hiring cycle, or when you need the thing working before you can justify the headcount.

Is an agency cheaper than hiring in-house?

At true steady state, no. One person at full time on one discipline beats a retainer on cost. A retainer wins when the need spans brand, experience, platform and growth at a fraction of each, when volume rises and falls, or when a quarter of search and ramp time is a quarter you do not have.

Can you work alongside our in-house team?

Yes, and most of our retainers do. We take the parts a single hire cannot carry, platform architecture, integrations, lifecycle, and hand back the parts your team can run. Documentation, portal architecture and playbooks are written as we go and are yours whether or not the retainer continues.

How quickly can you start compared with hiring somebody?

A senior strategist is on the engagement in the first week. If you want proof before a contract, a seven-day prototype is a fixed $5,000 and it is yours whatever happens next. A hire is a search, a notice period and a ramp, which is one quarter at best and two more often.

Would you ever tell us to hire instead of using you?

Yes, and it is part of the work. The engagements we end are usually the ones where the client should now employ the capability, and some capabilities are the business and belong inside your building permanently. You will hear that from us on the first call if it is already true.

Tell us the job descriptionyou were about to post.

We will tell you whether it is one job or four, and which of those a firm should carry and which belong to a person you employ. If the answer is hire, you will hear that first rather than last.
