Coming up on Pyxl’s 16th year as a successful digital agency, we have seen trends come and go, platforms rise and fall, and have adapted to every change. We would like to consider ourselves as digital marketing wizards, waving our wands and conjuring up strategies that deliver results for our clients. Hence, here we go, sharing the wisdom we’ve acquired in digital marketing over the past several years. So, grab your coffee, settle in, and get ready to learn some valuable marketing lessons that’ll help you take your digital marketing skills to the next level. Let’s go!

1. Stay up-to-date with the latest trends and technologies

In digital marketing, trends and technologies are ever-changing (trust us, we’ve seen it all!), so the first digital marketing lesson is to keep up with what’s new. By staying on top of new developments, you can ensure that your campaigns remain relevant and effective.

Pyxl Tip: Follow digital marketing publications and blogs for the latest news, marketing lessons, trends, and best practices. Some popular sources include Marketing Dive and Search Engine Journal, and Pyxl’s blog. Also, become a member of a digital marketing community on social media platforms and forums to learn from the experiences of other professionals.

2. Set realistic goals

When setting goals for your digital marketing campaigns, it’s important to be realistic. You simply cannot have a goal of going viral on social media instantly or having your sales quadruple overnight! Setting overly ambitious goals can lead to disappointment and frustration while setting realistic goals can help you stay motivated and focused.

Pyxl Tip: In order to set realistic and achievable goals, it’s helpful to use the SMART framework. The SMART acronym stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Timely. By setting clearly defined goals, you can improve focus, provide motivation, measure your progress, improve performance, and help overcome procrastination.

3. Focus on your audience

Isn’t our entire digital marketing effort aimed at our audience? Your audience is THE MOST important aspect of your digital marketing campaigns. Make sure that you are targeting the right people with your messaging and that your content is tailored to their needs and interests.

Pyxl Tip: First, define your audience using personas to better understand their wants and needs. Then keep track of your audience’s preferences and needs by conducting regular surveys. Discover what resonates with your audience by testing different messaging, channels, and formats. Based on your results, optimize your campaigns.

4. Be consistent

The importance of consistency in digital marketing cannot be overstated. It’s unrealistic to post a few tweets here and there and expect the world to notice. You have to be in it to win it, and that means showing up every day, rain or shine. Make sure that your messaging and branding are consistent across all channels and campaigns for maximum impact. Moreover, make sure you publish content regularly on your blog and social media channels to increase visibility.

Pyxl Tip: Make a content calendar that details your publishing schedule, including when and where you will post content. When you plan your content in advance, you will have a backlog of content ready when you need it. Don’t be a one-hit wonder, be a consistent digital marketing rockstar!

5. Build relationships

Building relationships with your audience is key to success in digital marketing. Think of it like building a cozy blanket fort (yep, we’re going there). Communication, respect, and trust are essential for building a strong foundation. Next, you add some fun elements, like branded content, influencer collaborations, and brand partnerships. In no time at all, you’ll have a comfortable and inviting space that everyone wants to be a part of.

Pyxl Tip: By holding events or webinars, encouraging conversation, and sharing user-generated content, you can build a community around your brand. Help your audience solve their problems or meet their needs by providing valuable content and resources. Engage with your followers on social media, respond to comments and questions, and offer value through your content.

6. Be agile

Being agile is important! No, we’re not talking about doing a backflip (although that would be pretty cool!). We’re talking about pivoting and adapting quickly in the ever-changing world of digital marketing. Be prepared to pivot your strategy as needed and adapt to changing trends and technologies. We have been able to accommodate changing client/audience needs as a result of being agile!

Pyxl Tip: You should set short-term goals and adjust your strategy according to those goals. Having this information can help you adapt to changes in the market or industry in a more agile and responsive manner. Here are some tips on how to create an adaptive digital marketing strategy.

7. Don’t forget about SEO

Search engine optimization (SEO) is still a crucial aspect of digital marketing. Think of SEO as the secret sauce to building a long-term, scalable digital marketing strategy. Therefore, you need to make sure that your website and content are optimized for search engines to improve visibility and drive traffic.

Pyxl Tip: Produce original, high-quality content relevant to your audience’s interests and needs. Optimize your headings and meta descriptions with keywords to make it easier for search engines to understand and rank your content in search results. Improve your search engine rankings by building high-quality backlinks from reputable websites. Here are the 4 key components of a successful SEO strategy.

8. Focus on quality over quantity

We know it’s tempting to pump out as much content as possible, but let’s take a moment to appreciate the phrase “quality over quantity.” Instead of trying to reach as many people as possible, focus on providing value to your target audience.

Pyxl Tip: Make sure you craft content that’s meaningful, helpful, and engaging for your audience. What questions do they need answering, where are they within the buyer’s journey, and what solutions can I provide as a result? These are the types of questions you’ll want to ask when thinking about how to provide value to your audience. You’ll see increased engagement and conversions as a result of your efforts and quality content.

9. Embrace the power of personalization

Imagine you’re at a party, and someone comes up to you and starts talking about a topic you’re not interested in. Boring, right? Now, imagine if someone comes up to you and talks about your favorite hobby or your dream vacation. Suddenly, you’re all ears! The same principle applies to digital marketing.

The ability to personalize can help to create a more positive and engaging experience for customers. If you customize your messaging and content to fit customers’ interests and preferences, you’ll create value for them and increase their engagement.

Pyxl Tip: A great marketing lesson to consider overall is utilizing a CRM tool like HubSpot, which can help make it easy to access customer data and automate personalization across your campaigns to easily create targeted experiences. As a result, you will be able to better understand your customers’ needs and preferences as well as build a more personal relationship with your audience.

10. Invest in content marketing

With content marketing, you can attract potential customers and generate leads by providing them with valuable information. Creating content that provides long-term value is one of the best aspects of content marketing. Once a piece of high-quality content is published, it can continue to attract and engage customers for months or even years.

Pyxl Tip: Plan your content strategy, which outlines your goals, target audience, and the types of content you will create. The purpose of a content strategy is to align your content with your overall marketing goals and optimize it to drive engagement and conversions.

11. Don’t overlook email marketing

Let’s talk about email marketing – a strategy that has been around since the dawn of the internet (okay, maybe not that long, but you get the idea!). First of all, email marketing gives you direct access to your audience’s inbox – and who doesn’t like a personal message? Email marketing allows you to track your metrics and see how your campaigns are performing. Optimizing your campaigns based on data enables you to make more informed decisions.

Pyxl Tip: Use a marketing tool like HubSpot to schedule your emails in advance to targeted lists, add personalization tokens to personalize your messages, and easily access email performance data to leverage for future campaigns.

12. Don’t be afraid to experiment

Are you ready to try something new with your digital campaigns? Great! You’re in luck – the world of digital marketing is all about experimentation! Firstly, experimentation allows you to discover what works and what doesn’t. We have to acknowledge that not every campaign hits it out of the park. But by experimenting, you can find the right combination of tactics, messages, and platforms that resonate with your audience.

Pyxl Tip: Experiment with new ad formats such as video, carousel, and interactive ads. Find out which format works best for your brand by testing out different styles. Take a chance on a social media platform you haven’t used or haven’t used in a long time. You never know, your potential audience might be interested in connecting with you in ways you haven’t thought of.

13. Leverage automation

Let’s face it, manual tasks can be repetitive and time-consuming. However, automation can save you time and increase your efficiency. Sending personalized emails, scheduling posts, and managing customer databases are all possible with automation tools.

Pyxl Tip: Choose a CRM that provides a wide variety of marketing and sales automation solutions. Also, make use of chatbots! The use of chatbots can help you automate customer service by answering common questions, providing support, and even making sales are all possible 24/7.

14. Be data-driven

Picture this: You’re a digital marketer, and you’re trying to come up with a new campaign. Your campaign takes hours to create, from brainstorming ideas to creating content to launching. However, how do you determine whether it’s working? That’s where data-driven thinking comes in! Being data-driven means using data to make informed decisions. Taking a guess or following your instinct isn’t enough. Understanding your audience, measuring your success, and optimizing your campaigns are possible with data-driven marketing.

Pyxl Tip: Develop personas for your target audience based on data such as gender, age, location, and interests. Create goals in advance to make sure you have metrics to compare to. Analyze reports and metrics regularly to make sure you’re still on track. And when in doubt, run A/B tests to see what could be working better. Remember, being data-driven doesn’t have to be boring! Embrace the fun side of data and use it to create better experiences for your audience.

15. Prioritize user experience

The idea of just putting some content on the website and calling it a day won’t work with your audience. Consider this, have you ever been on a website that took forever to load or was confusing to navigate? How about an email that was confusing or had too many calls to action? Potential customers may feel frustrated by these kinds of experiences and turn away from your business.

That’s where prioritizing user experience comes in. Always keep the end user in mind when creating a website, email, or advertisement. What are they looking for? How can they find the information they need? What can you do to make their experience seamless and enjoyable?

Pyxl Tip: Take a moment to picture yourself as a potential customer who visits your website or receives your email. What information are you looking for? What questions do you have? By thinking like a user, you can create a more intuitive and helpful experience. And lastly, test, test, test! The last thing you want to do is send an email that leads to the wrong link or a webpage with a 404 error.

16. Never stop learning

The last marketing lesson is to hit the books… or the blogs… or the podcasts… or wherever you like to learn new things! Digital marketing is an ever-changing field, so there’s always new marketing lessons to learn and explore. You can do more when you know more! Taking on new challenges and expanding your professional capabilities can be accomplished by learning new skills and techniques.

Hopefully, you will find these marketing lessons valuable as you move forward with your digital marketing journey. But if you need any help implementing any of these strategies, Pyxl is here to help you. Please do not hesitate to contact us.
