In 2010, Mashable held the inaugural Social Media Day to celebrate all things social media and its ability to connect us, people to people, brands to consumers, meme lovers to well… memes, and so on. In 2014, at Pyxl’s request, Governor Bill Haslam signed a proclamation to make Tennessee the fifth state to officially recognize June 30 as Social Media Day! And ever since, Pyxl has held the only event in Nashville to celebrate this great day.
We look at Social Media Day as a chance to focus on the communities and businesses that use social media. We want to celebrate the platforms and the people who do such an incredible job of connecting us. This past June we held our fourth event at The Local right here in Nashville. We did a happy hour and live panel with questions highlighting everything from recent social wins to future trends.
Our panelists were:
- David Drobny of @NashSevereWx
- Alex Wassel of the Nashville Sounds
- Ashley Houston of @NashvilleWifestyles
- Marissa Pellegrino of Soles4Souls
- John Hawbaker of Blue Cross Blue Shield
- Liz Schimmer of Vaco
One of our biggest goals for Social Media Day (beyond getting everyone together of course) was to increase engagement for the event. By using the hashtag #SMDayNash, attendees were able to participate in all of the fun and be entered to win some great prizes. The hashtag served as a great way to get the buzz going about the event and for us to engage with panelists, guests and anyone unable to make it.
A few of our favorite takeaways:
- The biggest trend right now by far is video content. NashvilleWifestyles loves seeing how video has changed the way influencers can reach their followers, on all platforms but especially on Instagram.
- When it comes to engagement with their followers most of our panelists saw the greatest numbers from their fans on Instagram just ask Marissa from Soles4Souls.
- The immediacy of Twitter is what drew the Nashville Weather Guys to the platform. They are able to instantly connect with their followers.
- An engagement strategy that the Nashville Sounds do each year is to change their name to the Nashville Honkey Tonks for one week each season. Sound familiar IHOB? They do an entire campaign and all of their branding is changed for that one week.
We know we couldn’t wrap up all of the fun we had in this little blog, but we hope that you got a taste for what Social Media Day is all about. We’re excited to continue the event and set the bar higher and higher each year as a leader in social media marketing right here in Nashville. We hope to see you at our event next year!
