You say you’re not creative? We beg to differ. Many people have the mindset that creativity has to do with the fine arts. However, it is really a part of everything that everyone does. What does creativity look like for you?
Sure, those who can paint beautiful pictures, take intriguing photos or write a poem are definitely creative in most people’s minds. Creativity comes in many different forms, including finding new ways to console and help frustrated clients at your call center, figuring out logistics for a large conference or putting a car back together.
Scientists used to think that creativity lived in the right side of the brain, but that myth has been busted. According to Psychology Today, “Creativity has no precise location in the human brain, and people who promise to reactivate your ‘neural creativity zones’ are just yanking your chain.” Communication between the different parts of the brain allows ideas to form. According to Antonio Damasio, a neuroscientist and director of the Brain and Creativity Institute at the University of Southern California, imagination, memory and emotions mesh together to form the concept we think of as creativity (source).
If you think about it, quite a bit of your creativity comes from a combination of your preexisting knowledge and ideas that you’ve previously seen or heard. When you form connections and put your own spin on things, you create something new.
So, is creativity something you can learn or acquire? Here are a few tips to help you get started:
- Think. Really hard. Up your brain activity by reading more and diving into new experiences.
- Make connections. Think about what you already know and connect it to what you just learned.
- Write everything down. Don’t risk forgetting your great ideas!
Creativity comes in many forms and at Pyxl, we exercise it in different ways each day. Check out our portfolio to see how we’ve combined our ideas to create winning solutions for our clients.
