Looking back, I remember dial-up internet, playing snake on a Nokia, polyphonic ring-tones, AOL Instant Messenger and life before social media. In short, aside from dating myself and more than likely making you feel old (my apologies), a lot has changed in the way we communicate and one of the biggest changes has been the addition of emojis in marketing.
Emojis are everywhere and loved by everyone. Or should we say ❤️ by everyone It seems like a recent phenomenon, but emojis have been around since the late 1990’s. Today, emojis are part of our everyday life — and brands are taking serious notice.
The fact is, brands are communicating differently than they would have 5 years ago. Today, being able to reach your customer often means telling a story and. It’s only natural, then, that eventually brands start communicating like their customers.
Since the beginning of 2015, brands have increased their emoji usage by 777 percent!
Don’t get me wrong here, I absolutely ❤️ this trend! I’m a “less is more” kind of person and emojis get to the point in a playful way.
For me personally, brands that use emojis stand out and are more memorable. Have you experienced the same As it turns out, Appboy found that emoji-enabled ads generated click-through rates that were 20 times higher than the industry average ⬆️.
Companies are even branching out and creating their own emoji keyboards ⌨️. At Pyxl, we have a few custom emojis of our own–everything from Batman to Yoda and a dancing turkey for those circumstances when or a high-five simply just doesn’t cut it.
Though emojis aren’t for everyone and there’s a time ⏳ and a place for playful ⛹️ communication versus more serious marketing, this is a trend we hope sticks around for a little while.
Fun Fact: We can all thank the Pocket Bell pagers for emojis the first emoji being a pixelated heart ❤️.
